Introducing… Goo Records

Goo Records was formed in 2022 when two blokes who love music decided to take a leap and do something that had previously been discussed as a bit of a pipe dream several times. And Goo Records became the real deal in November of the same year when those same two blokes signed a contract to release a 7” single with the band WELLY. Those two blokes were me and my good friend Tony.

In reality though the label started earlier in the year when Tony first saw WELLY playing a support slot that grabbed bis attention much more than the band he’d actually paid to see. He was immediately hooked and invited me to see them play a few weeks later as part of the alternative Great Escape line-up. As soon as we formed the label (and by formed, I mean registered the web domain) we knew we wanted WELLY as our first signing.

WELLY

A meeting with Welly himself in a Hanover pub in Brighton, and a bit of back and forth by email and we had a contract with the band to release a 7” single to coincide with an event early in 2023. Masters were produced, artwork drawn up and then we submitted everything to a pressing plant in Taiwan.

Our contracts are super simple and designed to be as artist friendly as we can afford. Inspired by a Podcast about Merge records we adopted their approach. Bands are signed for one release, we don’t restrict them, or tie them into a long-term deal, and we aim to make things as fair as possible financially. Our aim is to help give great bands the opportunity to release a 7” single, and hopefully make a few quid as well.

The WELLY 7” of two songs played live in a village hall has sold really well, you can get one of the last of them from Bandcamp here, and the band has gone from strength to strength over the least 6 months. They played seven shows across the Great Escape weekend this year and each one was packed. They’ve just completed some dates in France and will be playing the Victorious festival in Portsmouth this Summer.

We’ve since signed Canned Pineapple (another band Tony saw as a support act) and have an amazing 4-track 7” EP coming out on 23rd June. Each song is catchy as hell, could have been the lead single, and manage to capture their amazing live energy. That is available to pre-order now from Bandcamp, or from Resident Records. The band have just announced that they will be on the bill with The Wedding Present at their annual At The Edge Of The Sea event in August.

Owners Club

Owners Club

Completing the current roster is Owners Club. This time a band that I saw playing a support slot. I couldn’t get their tunes out of my head and when I took Tony to see them live, he was immediately won over. They’re a classic guitar pop four-piece with a real grasp of melody (as well as some fierce playing) and we can’t wait to share details of their first 7” which will be coming late Summer this year. Keep an eye out for an announcement of the record launch gig soon.

Following on from a sold-out show in Brighton in April we have all three bands on tour and sharing the bill for 5 nights from June 30th, taking in Portsmouth, Southampton, Guildford, Northampton and London. Head to the Goo Records events page for tickets, and you can watch a video trailer below.

Follow all our activity using this Linktree as we’ll have lots more news soon. There’s links to our social media pages so you can follow us, and our Bandcamp to buy any merch or music.

Please get in touch if you are and, a promoter, a fan or just want to say hi. We’d love to hear from you. hello@goorecords.com
