Matt Berry – Heard Noises

Its taken a while but people are finally taking Matt Berry the musician seriously, with his latest album Heard Noises peaking at 22 in the sales chart  – his biggest success yet.

His talent will come as no surprise to fans of his music. They know that while more famous for his comic acting he is a prolific musician.

Being recently admitted to the KPM labels roster of composers, whose work is used widely for TV and film, is testament to this.

Once again released on Acid Jazz Records  this is Berry’s 11th studio album and it’s is a belter. It’s a belt and braces-er in fact, that ranks for this listener at least, among his best releases.

Once again, the production is great, with Berry mastering electronica and folk pop sounds old and new perfectly.

And the songs are fantastic too. Among the best is Why on fire? Here I can imagine a disgruntled Berry reading insane social media posts by lunatics refusing to ask the questions that matter.

Another standout is I Gotta Limit, which sounds like a lost mid 1960s soul hit, especially with the vocals of Kitty Liv. A wonderful duet. Another lost 1960s hit is To live for what once was.

There are monsters comes at you with a punch before the sumptuous laid-back jazz kicks in.

To put this in context for keen students of Berryology. This is very close to 2011’s Kill the Wolf.
