I’ve searched and searched and can’t find any English speaking reviews of Ku!’s self-titled debut album.
In fact there is so little about them outside of Spain that I had to use Google translate just to find out about them.
So over to you Google and their record label Candorro:
“Ku! arrived at Candorro as “a luminous rock band with flashes of lo-fi punk” and defined themselves as “something similar to the sensation of eating a powerful piece of mint gum with caffeine,” and the truth is, they are all that and much more.
“Despite the difficulty of defining such energetic and original sounds in words, Ku! present themselves as a new, original and resilient vision of rock. Their songs are an exciting burst of a fun, risky sound, full of new sensations.
“Slowly building since 2021, songs like “Seis semanas,” “Calor,” and “Rápido” revealed what they were up to. Those songs were the starting point for a band that now arrives with their debut album, “Ku!” (Candorro, 2025), with which they show all their cards. And they are winning.
“Formed by members of leading bands on the scene like Yo Diablo and Los Premios, Ku! They show a forceful and fun live performance, a mix between The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Thee Oh Sees, Parquet Courts and reminiscences of early lo-fi pop.”
If that fine description, which Google has probably butchered, isn’t enough to intrigue you then their debut album should too. It’s wonderful and, as their record label describes, is very reminiscent of the likes of Parquet Courts.
Opener Txan Txan is joyful as the guitars interplay with each this way and that. And there’s plenty more. Rapido is fine, fine lo-fi pop. Tu has a touch of early Strokes, while Seis Semanas, which was one of their early singles from three years ago, is another standout.
There’s great guitars all over this, mixed with a sense of humour and wonderful music.
Among other tracks to mention is Michael and closer Botas de Cuero, which was a single from last year.
