Death Valley Girls – Nottingham Bodega (May 7, 2025)

There’s a riot going on in Nottingham. A punk rock riot via the Death Valley Girls from Los Angeles.

Always judge a band by their name and there’s is such a great name. They also did things to our hearts and feet that lesser bands fail to do.

With an ever-evolving line up, tonight the band comprised of Laena Myers on guitar, Teddy Waggi on bass, the nuclear-powered Bailey Chapman on drums, and their new secret weapon Sarah Safaie on saxophone, all fronted by the quiet, shy and introverted (NOT!) Bonnie Bloomgarden their ringleader and powerhouse of a vocalist.

The band were, to use the local vernacular, shit hot!

I had the temerity to mention to Sarah afterwards that we got Siousxie and the Banshees vibes, with perhaps a soupcon of X Ray Spex and the Stooges. She didn’t hit me.

The new album Islands in the Sky was given a thorough pasting, and the track Magic Powers was particularly fab.

Don’t you just love it when the front person of a band get off stage and joins the crowd? This is what Bonnie did on more than one occasion, carried away by the music she danced and sang, completely overtaken by her emotions, it made for great rock n roll.

Near the end Bonnie gave us a brief lecture on the life-giving properties of nettles, an audience member responded by mentioning dock leaves and how they alleviate stings.

Phew! Garage rock and urtica dioica. What a combination!
