The Bevis Frond’s Nick Saloman is not one for resting on his laurels (or Hardys). His latest album Horrorful Heights is the umpteenth release since November 1385. Well, it seems that way. The word prolific comes to mind.
The thing is, he’s still producing loose-fitting top-quality rock and roll with fabulous guitar solos, great lyrics and earworms aplenty.
Aided by his mates, Paul Simmons on additional guitar Louis Wigget on bass, Dave Pearce on drums and Nick’s daughter Debbie Wileman contributing backing vocals on a number of tracks, they all dig into his tunes with gusto.
Highlights for me include Best Laid Plans, and Square House, a couple of lovely melodic mid paced rockers.
Hiss on the other hand is the polar opposite, a great little riff and all hell breaking out on the guitar solos!
Another great track is A Simple Pursuit, which starts off deceptively hushed, guitar hiding in the background ready to ambush you. As the urgency builds up in Nicks voice, they suddenly attack!
As old age beckons I have as my comforts in no particular order, large Mars Bars, Germolene (don’t ask), Bevis Frond albums and Guinness.
This review would have been longer, but I must press replay. Bloody earworms!
I now have nearly as many Bevis albums as Hendrix albums.
