The House of Love – The Hairy Dog, Derby (7 June 2026)

The House of Love were demigods back in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Worshipped by many and totally original in a haze of shoegaze.

It was Guy Chadwick’s distinctive vocals and Terry Bickers’ sterling guitar work that propelled them into our hearts and minds.

Sadly, it all unravelled. Terry left many years ago, to form the equally effervescent Levitation and Guy now has a  new band, who are tremendous.

There’s no other original members in the current configuration. But fear not, he’s got THOSE songs and a 20-track setlist. Time to sway like it’s 1992.

The new House of Love guys are Hugo Degenhardt on drums, Harry Osborne on bass and Keith Osborne on lead guitar. They all played as though their lives depended on it. An absolutely rock solid ensemble and Guy had fun. He never used to grin back in the day.

From the get-go the band were as tight as a gnat’s arse, Beatles and the Stones was respectfully mellow and faithful But it was great how they tore into Don’t Know Why I Love You straight after.

Of course they did Christine and Shine On,  but also Feel, and Burn Down the World from 1992’s Babe Rainbow.

An encore was required, a rocking Destroy the Heart did the job but they topped that with an extended Love in a Car, that fortunately didn’t tear the roof off because it was raining outside but it did vibrate the guttering quite a bit.

Oh, how we swayed.
