One of our favourite compilation series returns with Brighton based musician, producer and DJ Bonobo taking curating duties on this latest collection of tracks for the wee small hours.
Turns out being a DJ really helps curating duties as Simon Green, aka Bonobo, has done a great job mixing the modern with the old and the serious with the crazy. The oddities he’s picked out are particularly good, especially the fine brass on Flipside by the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and the Mehehan Street Band’s The Traitor.
Other highlights include One Thing, by twee synth popsters Peter & Kerry and the Tarentino soundtrack-esque Didn’t I by Dorando. Nina Simone’s cover of Randy Newman’s Baltimore and Eddi Front’s beautiful Gigantic offer some genuine passion as well.
For the curator’s customary cover version Bonobo has also excelled, opting for a smart electro-lounge version of Donovan’s Get Thy Bearings.
With a largely instrumental focus Bonobo has clearly thought long and hard about this project, which is carefully arranged from start to finish to create one of the best additions yet to the Late Night Tales collection.
