Darren Hayman is proving to be pretty industrious in 2011, not content with producing a song a day in January, playing bass with Rotifer and being part of the Vostok 5 album and exhibition he has a number of releases up his sleeve.
The albums about the Essex witch-trials and Britain’s lidos are forthcoming and he has just released The Ships Piano. The album was written after Hayman was mugged in 2009 and wanted to write quiet, simple, music to aid his recuperation. He says of the process:
If you are a songwriter and something bad happens to you, people say, “You can write a song about it at least.” They mean well, but the big events in life have to seap out gradually with me and not in urgent, confessional bursts. The songs on this record are pleas for calm. As I get older I find I prefer small, quiet things.
